Languages & Film

From emotional engagement to cultural immersion, films are a great and powerful way to help students stay engaged and motivated to learn a language.

Through dialects, slangs and colloquial expressions, regular engagement with authentic native content helps students learn a language the way it’s actually spoken!

Give an introduction to a culture, not just a language
Films open up the colourful world of another culture: the sights and traditions of a different place. Inspire language learning by this experience!
Make learning meaningful with emotional engagement
The emotional scenes of films allow students to develop empathy and to participate in meaningful class discussions.
Discover different native accents and dialects
Global cinema offers students the chance to listen and learn from a variety of accents in their authentic context.

Over 90% of language learners drop out

Across language learning solutions, there is currently an industry-wide problem of high dropout rates due to the lack of student engagement. This has only increased as learning moved online almost overnight!

Many current language learning tools rely on tedious curricula and forms of delivery, such as flashcards and vocabulary exercises, which often provide little or no cultural and social context.

Films and videos are a great way to help students stay engaged and motivated by evoking empathy and cultural understanding - while being entertained at the same time!

Moreover, the average Gen Z student now spends at least four hours a day watching mobile videos. While traditional teaching methods struggle to keep students engaged, the modern students now respond to film- and video-based learning - which is at the heart of what we do at FilmDoo!

81.6% of participants expect to increase their their use of film and video content for language learning.

Why FilmDoo Expanded Into Language Learning

FilmDoo first launched as a movie-streaming platform helping people to discover and watch great films from around the world. FilmDoo now has over 280,000 registered users from 194 countries and over 3,000 films. Today, FilmDoo has one of the largest international film catalogues online.

In 2019, FilmDoo noticed that over 80% of their traffic was coming from language-related searches and keywords. In a survey that soon followed, over 70% of users said that the number one reason they are a watching a film on FilmDoo is because they are learning a foreign language. The company conducted more research and saw that there was an opportunity to expand into online edtech by providing film- and video-based learning which can help raise and retain student engagement through engaging films.

FilmDoo went on to develop an innovative layer of edtech that can now turn any film and video into an interactive lesson.

Today, FilmDoo is the world’s first edutainment platform to combine language learning with an extensive and powerful international catalogue of films.

Coming Soon

FilmDoo will soon be launching dedicated language learning film collections for language schools and teachers to use to create teaching material and interactive lessons using our edtech tool

The key language collections we will be starting out with are: English, Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, German and Dutch.

Learning a language without the cultural framework in which it exists is like cooking ethnic food without the spices of the region. You simply will remove all of the flavour from the language
